Journey Thru the Gospel - Part 4 - Eternal Life

Roots of Faith 27 Jun 2008 | : ARBA4, ROF Sunday Shul, Roots of Faith

In this week’s class, Ross picks up with the second part of the conversation between Yeshua and Nicodemus. Here we find them conversing about Eternal life. The basis for this teaching is found in John 3:12-21.

The Hebrew Bible has only a few passages that speak specifically about “eternal life”; see Genesis 3:22 and Daniel 12:12 for examples.

Ross asks the question, “What shall we do to inherit eternal life?”

Yeshua compared his death to a bizarre story in the book of Numbers. He teaches from the 21st chapter and the story of the “Serpent” that Moses crafted and put upon a pole. This became an idol to the people.

You will not want to miss this class as Ross makes some interesting parallels between the death of Yeshua and the serpent in the wilderness.

Daughters of Wisdom Program #23 -Women of Valor Part 21 - Foster Mother or Daughter

The sixth ‘woman of valor’ is introduced and examined from various angles, including Midrash and Josephus, in addition to scripture. She is also compared with the sixth paragraph of Psalm 119, which lends some interesting pictures concerning her character. Proverbs 31 is revisited in light of the irony of this heroine and her later counter-part.

The Gates Program #96 - The Four Edicts

Four edicts of observance were given to the non-Jewish believers at the Jerusalem Council. These are examined from Acts 15 and 21, as well as Ezekiel 33. These four edicts actually expand out into a number of commandments that most non-Jews are oblivious to today. Why these four edicts were necessary for these two groups of believers, Jews and non-Jews, to have fellowship together is examined.

Program #25 - A Gentile Question Part 4

I conclude the “Gentile Question.”

I pick up with Avot 5:22 and the Talmidim of Avraham.  I relate this with the book of Yochanan (John) 8:34-39.  Here Yeshua quotes the Mishna Avot 5:22 in his argument with the Shammaite talmidim.

I discuss the characteristics of Avraham’s talmidim.

  1. The Good Eyes
  2. The Humble Spirit
  3. The meek Soul (spirit)

I discuss the views of Hillel and Shammai concerning Gentiles and the olam haba.  I conclude with Yeshua’ view of Gentiles and the olam haba as purported from Luke 4:16ff

I explicate Acts 10:28 and 15:18-21.

Gospel Studies, Part 3 - The New Birth

Roots of Faith 20 Jun 2008 | : ARBA4, ROF Sunday Shul, Roots of Faith

In this week’s class, Ross continues his journey through the gospel and begins to incorporate the Gospel of John.

He shows that some of the ideas from the Gospels have been taken out of their Hebraic context and misunderstood. He focuses on the conversation between Yeshua and Nicodemus, who may be a well known figure (the Talmudic Nicodemus ben Gorion).

What is the new birth? Was this concept in the Hebrew Bible? Ross shows that it is and brings us back to the idea that the Torah is and always has been a matter of the heart.

A Gentile Question Part 3

Torah Focus 17 Jun 2008 | : ARBA4, Midrashim, Torah Focus

Midrashim - with Dr. Walter Oakley
New shows available every Tuesday.

Program #24 - A Gentile Question Part3

I continue with Pirke Avot (Pirke Avot 1:10-12) and the discussion concerning the “Gentile Question.”

I discuss how the sons of proselytes had ascended to the level of Nasi (President) and the Av Beit Din of the Sanhedrin. Likewise, I discuss how that these “sons of Proselytes” were those who taught Hillel and Shammai.

We delve further into the “Gentile Question.” What does the Gentile have to do to inherit the olam haba?

I discuss the idea that Shemayah and Avtalyon were so great in the eyes of HaShem that the tradition of the Torah passed through the sons of Proselytes.

Likewise, I discuss their place as teachers of Yisrael, Hillel and Shammai.

I discuss Yeshua as Disciple of Aaron. I further discuss the relationship of the Book of Acts with this question.

Likewise, I purport the idea that the Gentile question is the result of the 18 edicts of Shammai.

I conclude with a Mishna from Avot 5:22 (scroll down to verse 22) being the disciples, descendants of Avraham. This passage tells us the attributes of the sons of Avaraham being a generous eye, a humble spirit and a meek soul. I purport the idea that Avraham sought gentiles bringing them into relationship with HaShem the One true G-d.
