In this Torah portion, Miriam and Aaron die. Moses and Aaron are informed that they will not be allowed into the land promised to their fathers. What did they do that brought about this sentence? What can we learn from their mistakes? The children of Israel quarrel with Moses and with God. Serpents are sent among the people and Moses is instructed to make an object for the bitten ones to look upon. What can we learn from a careful examination of these words? You will not want to miss this class.

In this week’s class Ross teaches on Torah reading Shelach Lecha. It means literally, “send for yourselves”. It contains the story of the “spies”. Ross carefully dissects the texts and brings out some key points that are relevant for believers today. He points out the real “sins of the spies” and many other things in this class. How are we to live by faith? Should we ignore the giants in our lives? You will not want to miss this class.

Israel’s enemies, bent on their destruction are always scheming. They are relentless in their attempt…ts to bring harm and destroy peace. This week, some if these extremists employed one of the oldest tricks in the book – the Latin epic poem “The Aeneid” that is. The plot played out this week was like a modern re-telling of Virgil’s work except that the enemy did not attempt to penetrate the opponent’s walls in a wooden horse but aboard an “innocent” vessel bringing in “humanitarian aid”. The outcry over Israel’s actions is incredible. Well I say “good job Israel”! As the Trojan priest Laocoon declared in the Aeneid,”Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes” – “I fear Greeks, even those bearing gifts”. The old trick used by the Greeks, now called the Trojan horse, has become a symbol of any trick which results in an enemy being allowed, through deception, to enter an otherwise secure zone. Indeed there is nothing new under the sun. A study of history is often the best way to prepare for the future.
