The excitement is building about the UIWU conference in Charlotte, NC this coming weekend (April 29 – May 1). A lot of this excitement comes from the fact that those not able to attend, will be able to join us via the internet. We are going to incur considerable expenses above and beyond normal, to facilitate the live Internet broadcast from the hotel. We would appreciate any help you might be able to supply to help cover these expenses. There is no cost to view the web-cast for anyone. However we have learned that people are open and willing to help, if they know there is a need. ROF/SWW could really use your support to help cover these expenses. Our thanks go out to those that regularly support our efforts.

Glenn Chatterton teaches this lesson from the Torah portion of the intermediate Shabbat reading for Pesach. He explores the various meanings of the Hebrew root Paw-law’ (Pey – Lamed) beginning from the keynote passage of Exodus 33:16 found in the reading for this Sabbath. Glenn follows the trail of this amazing root word through the Tanakh and reveals how it is clearly tied to the Testimony, the Torah, the Name and the very thoughts of YHVH. He ends this teaching by revealing from the Hebrew prophets how the concept behind this Hebrew root is an integral part of the overall plan of YHVH for Israel and all of humanity.
I have had several compliments from those who watched this teaching live. You will not want to miss this class. Get your Bibles out and prepare to work through some incredible passages where this Hebrew word is found.

The Torah reading this week is called Acharey Mot (Leviticus 16:1 – 18:30). It is also a special Sabbath called Shabbat HaGadol, which means the big Sabbath. This is the Sabbath that immediately precedes Passover. It was customary in the ancient synagogue to teach on the wonderful achievement of redemption / freedom from Egyptian bondage and the miracle of the Exodus on this Sabbath. It was also on this Sabbath that the ancient preacher made an attempt to deliver their most meaningful and informative sermon of the year. Ross combines the themes of this Torah reading and the story of the Exodus in this week’s teaching. He explores a phrase found in Leviticus 18 that is found in 5 places in the Hebrew Bible to base his teaching on. Also included in this class is a careful look at a phrase that is repeated 10 times in the Hebrew Bible. This phrase shows the way to redemption. You will not want to miss this class. How are we to prepare for the season of redemption? What is our part in the coming Exodus described in the prophets? You will learn this and more in this teaching. Listen to the class and share it with others who may be interested.

On this date in history (April 14,1865), at 10:13 PM, President Abraham was shot in the back of the head at point blank range by John Wilkes Booth. It is believed by some that the assassin had originally intended to kidnap the President and use him in an exchange for some Confederate prisoners, but that all changed when Booth attended a speech and heard the President speak about voting rights for black Americans. The speech was delivered on April 11, 1865, three days before the murder.
President Lincoln was watching the play, “Our American Cousin” when Booth slipped in behind him, aimed at the back of his head and fired what would be a fatal shot at point blank range. President Lincoln would die the next morning at 7:22 AM. A Presbyterian minister was asked to offer a prayer.
Lincoln reportedly never joined a church, but according to biographer James G. Randall, Lincoln was “a man of more intense religiosity than any other President of the United States.” He once told his friend Joshua Speed, “Take all of this book [the Bible] upon reason that you can, and the balance on faith, and you will live and die a happier and better man.”
The author Bruce Feiler in his work, America’s Prophet – Moses and the American Story, reports that according to his wife Mary, Abraham Lincoln’s last words were, “there is no city on earth he so much desired to see as Jerusalem.” Moments later he was shot. (page 170)
He was shot on Good Friday that year, and America’s ministers took the opportunity to speak of his role in America.
I have incorporated his words in my classes and pointed out some interesting things about his life and so it is fitting that I should mark this day. Shortly after he died, Secretary of War Stanton said, “Now he belongs to the Ages.” So on this day, we should take note of a great American and a good man who stood up for the rights of all people. I for one look forward to meeting him one day in Jerusalem, the place he longed to see. I have some things I want to talk with him about.

In this week’s lesson Ross covers the Biblical concept of “uncleanness”. Many people have struggled with this and so Ross shares his understanding of this important subject. The Hebrew word “tamei” is most often translated “unclean” or “defiled”, but many students of the Bible are not sure exactly what this means.
The Hebrew word “tamei” occurs some 279 times in the Hebrew Bible and so this must be an important topic! Ross shows that Israel – the Ten Tribes are considered unclean and then goes on to share what it will take to bring them back into the camp.
You will not want to miss this class. The dialogue session is also loaded this week. Enjoy the teaching and check us out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/rootsoffaith, or join our ever growing global community (Synagogue Without Walls) at www.rootsoffaith.net.
