Masei – The Journey

Roots of Faith 30 Jul 2011 | : ROF Shabbat Services, Roots of Faith, Syndicated

In this teaching, Ross covers the final reading from the book of Numbers. In Hebrew, the word translated as “journeys” is more accurately related to the “pulling up” of stakes. The idea conveyed is that the children of Israel’s wilderness experience was marked by movement. They would pull up their tent stakes when God wanted them to move. Ross suggests in this teaching that our walks are similar. Since this reading emphasizes these stops and movements along the way, perhaps we should recount our own spiritual journeys. Mattote – a Message for the Tribes

Roots of Faith 23 Jul 2011 | : ROF Shabbat Services, Roots of Faith, Syndicated

In this week’s class Ross focuses on a rare Hebrew word that occurs on 10 times in the Hebrew Bible. The word shows up several times in this week’s reading and frames up what he feels is a message to the tribes. From the laws concerning vows unto the request of the children of Gad and Reuven, we find meaning that is relevant for us today. Have many of us become guilty of the same sins that sentenced Israel to 40 years in the wilderness. You will not want to miss this teaching.

Pinchas – Zeal and the Spirit

Roots of Faith 16 Jul 2011 | : ROF Shabbat Services, Roots of Faith, Syndicated

In this week’s class, Ross shares his understanding of zeal and the spirit. The heroes of the readings this week in both the Torah and Prophets are known for their zeal – Pinchas and Elijah. One can learn much from this study. We even read in Psalm 106:28-31, that the zeal of Pinchas is counted to him for righteousness! But is this all that we should learn from this lesson? According to Ross, the answer is no. He shows a view of both of these men that lends to the idea that zeal is not enough. You will not want to miss this class.

The Book of Bilaam – Torah Reading Balak

Roots of Faith 09 Jul 2011 | : ROF Shabbat Services, Roots of Faith, Syndicated

In this week’s class Ross covers what was anciently called the Book of Balaam. Many are familiar with his story. The King of Moab hires the seer to curse the children of Israel, but he is unable to do so. Ultimately he blesses Israel. Ross shows that his words have come to us in various forms from antiquity. He also shows an interesting connection between this Torah Reading and technology. And finally Ross shares with his listeners, what according to God is good. Religions seek to define this in a host of competing ways, but what is it that God desires from you? You will not want to miss this class.

When Moses Did Not Believe in God – Chukkat

Roots of Faith 02 Jul 2011 | : ROF Shabbat Services, Roots of Faith, Syndicated

In this week’s lesson, Ross covers a most interesting subject. The Torah records a time when even the greatest of the prophets makes a mistake. In this week’s Lesson, Moses does something that prevents him from leading the children of Israel into the Land of Promise. What was it that he failed to do? As usual, we meet with a quarreling and rebellious people. This is nothing new, but this week’s reading shows us that even Moses sinned. What can we learn from all of this. The lessons learned from a study in the book of Numbers (Bamidbar) are quite helpful for our generation. “Listen up ye rebels” is the cry of Moses, but then he is accused of the same sin and perhaps more! If Moses committed a sin which kept him from entering the land, should we not seek to discover what led to this punishment? You will not want to miss this class. Listen to the teaching and share it with others.
